DISTRICT 44
District 44, was formed in 1911 and composed of three lodges, viz L.O.L. 184, L.O.L.228 and L.OL. 252. The Disrict Lodge has long had an influence for good on the communities of Prestonpans, Tranent and Port Seton and has through the years enjoyed stability of membership. District 44 has enjoyed a fuitful existence and took an active part in the old Amalagamated Districts body with Grand Lodge; during this time it is interesting to note that ' walking dues' were set at one shilling (5p) at which there was an outcry by members who felt it was far too much. In 1933, L.O.L. 105, L.O.L.252 and L.O.L.188 wished to form a new District Lodge, and it was noted that L.O.L. 169, who had agreed with the proposed move, eventually pulled out, however the new District No. 52, was eventually approved and to this day a good working relationship is still held by both Districts.

A feature of District meetings during the Second World War was 'The Jock Box' which was approved by all Lodges as a fund to help soldiers who came home on leave and help ensure them of a good time away from the fighting. During the years, District L.O.L. 44 has had many homes, and, finally, through the hard work of members, they moved to the new District headquarters in 1957. Whilst being justifiably proud of their 'Club', it ill continue, even now, to take hard work and commitment from all Lodges to maintain it, and this should not be forgotten.

The District Masters and office- bearers who have served District No. 44 down through the ages are too numerous to mention by name, however, needless to say, everyone who has done so has contributed to its well-being, and, as they look forward to a secure future with Orangeism,

District 44 now hold their meetings in the halls of Tranent True Blues L.O.L. 228

The History or Story Behind My Site
TRANENT TRUE BLUES L.O.L 228

Founded originally in 1910 by brethren of L.O.L. 184, including tranent man bro John Dodds, P.M., who is reputed to have paraded alone on occasion in full regalia down tranent high street, acknowledging all, before moving on to join district L.O.L. 44 on parade.

Bro. Dodds died in 1969, but still parades every year, as his portrait is on our banner (L.O.L. 228), this time supported by many more orangemen and women. As a lodge we have our own ground and halls and see ourselves as a vital part of the community life in the town.

Over the last few years, 228 have refurbished and repaired the halls. There is a hall commitee in place to make sure that repairs are mended and the hall is kept up to standards.

A strong Ulster connecion is maintained with biannual visits to "St. Paul's Church Defenders L.O.L. 1960 in Belfast. Also within the hall to show our gratitude there is a decorative mural of LOL 228 directly facing a mural of LOL 1960 inside the orange hall. The Lodges also have joint crests on their lodge ties

L.L.O.L.214 - "Daughters of Israel": Opened as a Tranent Lodge in Castlepark Social Club, Prestonpans, on the third Thursday in April, 1977, it now meets in the Blair Halls, Tranent.

L.OL.135 - "John Knox Memorial ": The Lodge was opened in then burgh of Cockenzie and Port Seton on the 2nd April, 1966, the warrant being issued in th name of the late Bro. A. Harkness,P.D.M. Their first banner bearing a striking portrait of John Knox was raised in ay in 1967, the present banner bearing a similar portrait. Membership was at its peak as Cockenzie generating station was being completed, with many members from across the central area of Scotland.

L.O.L. 184 -"Eastern Star": This is the oldest Lodge in the District. It was formed on 7th September, 1907, with the Worthy Master being Bro. William Colquhoun. The Lodge was formed by members of the Irish Fusiliers of which company was based in Cockenzie, nea Port Seton, and the original name of the Lodge was "The Inniskillen Purple Guards". The mmbership of this Lodge grew from strength to strength and finaaly achieved District status in 1911 with three Lodges being formed from the members within the area. L.O.L. 184 changed their name to "Eastern Star" in the twenties, and members from the Lodge continued to have a profound effect on the spread of Orangeism in the area, with members of the Lodge going to help open other Lodges, and also to the aid of those in difficulties. L.O.L 184, along with other Lodges in the District, was Instumental in the founding of 'Castlepark Social Club', Prestonpans, which many Orange brethren within Scotland have visited at one time.
But sadly in the 90's this was pulled down.

L.O.L.106 - "Lily of the East": Formed in Prestonpans on 2nd November, 1922, with Sis. Marion White in the chair, immediately followed by Sis. K. Findlay. From 1926-36, Sis. J. Easton occupied the position of W.M., and, following her death, her daughter Sis. Mary Newton was elected and installed in the chair, which she occupied until 1967 - a long and distinguished Orange career which was epitomised by her election as Worthy Grand Misress of the Ladies Association of Scotland in 1946. In that year, with the help of the memberhip, Sis. Newton raised theum of £946.00 which was donated to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Sis. Newton was alsoawarded three times for the largest increase in Lodge membership, which in the early 1960's stood at over 200. This Lodge led to the founding of Ladies' Lodges in Tranent and Cockenzie and Port Seton.

L.O.L. 211 - "Daughters of Naomi": Formed as Cockenzie and Port Seton Lodge on 9th May,1968, it met in Prestonpans until 11th October, 1973, when it moved to Port Seton. The Lodge has had two banners during its lifetime, the first dedicated by Bro. Rev. J. A. Fletcher on the 3rd July, 1969, and the second by Bro. Pator R. Campbell on the 20th June 1987. Sister A.P. Rolland, founder member, was presented with the Institution's 50 years' service medal and diploma in 1990. Sadly Sister Rolland passed away this year (2002)
our condolences go the her family.
She was an Example to The Sisterhood.

The Daughters of Naomi LLOL 211
are now at the David Bellany Centere, Port Seton

J.L.O.L. 53
"Young Sons and Daughters of King William": The inaugural meeting of the District's Juvenile Lodge was held in Castlepark Social Club (billy's bar) on the 9th of December, 1961, the warrant being granted in the name of Bro. Thomas Seaton. Enthusiastic participants in all Orange ventures, and looking forward to some members again taking part in the 'County of the East' holiday camp, which provided such a success. The Lodge did meet in Castlepark Social Club on the last Monday of the Month but with it's closure they now meet in Prestonpans Community Centre or Prestonpans Town Hall the Juvenile Lodge is still going strong.
